The Varia lights up when first turning it on. The official light mode start under two conditions - when the light network is formed with a controlling device (Garmin Edge, Wahoo Bolt, etc.) or when a new activity recording on the controlling device is started.
I typically set it to start when a new activity is recording to help save battery and as if I'm moving and need the light I'm also recording an event. If you use the Varia when not recording an activity, though, you'll want to set the light mode to begin when the light network is formed.
How to Set with a Garmin Edge 830/1030
- Enter the Sensor screen by selecting the three bar icon at the bottom, then
Sensors, then your desired Varia light (usually titledLights). - Select
Network Options. - Select
Light Beam Activated. - Choose your desired setting.
